It is highly advisable for anyone going to a Newark Bears <\/strong>game to pick up a program.\u00c2\u00a0 This goes for regulars at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium <\/strong>as well as the casual fan or someone watching the Bears on the road.<\/p>\n

Thirty-six games into the campaign or just past midway in the first half of the 140-game season, and Tim Raines\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>team has already used 38 players.\u00c2\u00a0 The most astonishing number probably is in the fact Raines has called on 12 different pitchers to start games.<\/p>\n

Paul Fagan, Matt Smith <\/strong>and James (Bubba) O\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Donnell<\/strong> have pretty well held their own in the rotation, compiling a combined 8-7 record, while everyone else\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthe other starters as well as the relievers\u00e2\u20ac\u201dare only 6-15, which goes quite a distance in explaining why the Bears fell seven and a half \u00c2\u00a0games off the pace of Freedom Division <\/strong>pacesetting Somerset<\/strong> after a 9-5 defeat to Southern Maryland <\/strong>before 5,179 fans in Newark Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n

<\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We are continuing to build a team here as the season goes on,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Raines said.<\/p>\n

Among the most recent newcomers are catcher Isaiah Ka\u00e2\u20ac\u2122aihue,<\/strong> who was with York <\/strong>briefly last season, <\/strong>infielder Shawn Williams <\/strong>and a 6-foot-5 right-hander, Vince Perkins<\/strong>, who could add needed depth to the rotation.<\/p>\n

Michael Ryan Gets Time at First Base <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Former Somerset<\/strong> <\/strong>outfielder Michael Ryan <\/strong>may have caught at least a temporary break in the freak accident that cost Los Angeles<\/strong> Angels of Anaheim<\/strong> first baseman Kendry Morales <\/strong>his season.\u00c2\u00a0 Ryan was at first base Monday in the Angels\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 7-1 win at Kansas City<\/strong> <\/strong>with a single and run scored in three at-bats before he was removed for defense.\u00c2\u00a0 It was only Ryan\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fourth game with more than one at-bat since mid-May.\u00c2\u00a0 The \u00e2\u20ac\u212208 Atlantic Leaguer<\/strong> is 4-for-23 (.174) in 14 appearances since joining the American League <\/strong>team.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Nelson Figueroa <\/strong>has hit another roadblock in the majors.\u00c2\u00a0 Philadelphia<\/strong> <\/strong>has designated the onetime Long Island Ducks <\/strong>righty for assignment.\u00c2\u00a0 He was 1-1 with a save and a 4.82 ERA in 18.2 innings.<\/p>\n

Ed Rogers Called the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcGlue\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 for His Triple-A Team<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>The praise could not get much better for former Bridgeport<\/strong> <\/strong>shortstop Ed Rogers<\/strong>, who is Mr. Versatility for the Arizona<\/strong> Diamondbacks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 <\/strong>top farm club in Reno<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
