Scott&#8217;s role in <em>Strangelove<\/em><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>New Business<\/p>\n<p>Al* and Tipper Gore are splitsville.\u00c2\u00a0 There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an old joke going around that he claims to have invented the internet.\u00c2\u00a0 Whether or not this is true, I recently read another bragadocious claim about Al and Tipper; that they were the inspiration for <em>Love Story<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 What is true is that Gore was a Harvard roommate to Tommy Lee Jones and that bring us to this week\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s installment of my wackiness.<\/p>\n<p>There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Joe Jackson, the illiterate bribe-taking Black Sock who was portrayed by Ray Liotta in <em>Field of Dreams<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Then there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Joe Jackson, the pro-smoking English musician who has made forays into New Wave and jazz.\u00c2\u00a0 I know what you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re thinking: how can Daly possibly connect these two?\u00c2\u00a0 In case you forgot, over the winter I mentioned <em>Eight Men Out<\/em>. That was a book by Eliot Asinof about the Black Sox.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 John Sayles adapted the book into a movie and he has a small part as Ring Lardner.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 D. B. Sweeney played Shoeless Joe.\u00c2\u00a0 Lardner was a big sportswriter almost 100 years ago; a more versatile Joe Posnanski of his day.\u00c2\u00a0 Lardner\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s son was a screenwriter for four decades and adapted the book <em>M*A*S*H<\/em> for the big screen.\u00c2\u00a0 Ring Lardner Jr. had a daughter named Kate.\u00c2\u00a0 She was married to Tommy Lee Jones for a few years.<\/p>\n<p>Tommy Lee Jones is a good connector in these types of exercises.\u00c2\u00a0 In addition to being Gore\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s roommate, he appeared in <em>JFK<\/em> with Kevin Bacon and <em>Men In Black<\/em> with Will Smith.\u00c2\u00a0 I think I liked him best in the <em>Lonesome Dove<\/em> miniseries.\u00c2\u00a0 You could also connect Jones back to the Deadball days of baseball because he portrayed the title character in <em>Cobb<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 One of his early roles was in the aforementioned <em>Love Story<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Erich Segal, who wrote that book and screenplay, also wrote the screenplay for the Beatle\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Yellow Submarine<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 The Fab Four would go on to record <em>Let It Be<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Billy Preston appeared on that album; playing electric piano and Hammond organ on various songs.<\/p>\n<p>Preston might be the Kevin Bacon of music.\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s appeared with artists as diverse as the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Eric Burdon, Isaac Hayes, and Johnny Cash.\u00c2\u00a0 He also alternated with Nicky Hopkins as a keyboardist for the Rolling Stones.\u00c2\u00a0 He was with Mick and company during the <em>Exiles On Main Street<\/em> days.\u00c2\u00a0 I hear people rave about that album, but I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get it.\u00c2\u00a0 I like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Happy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Tumbling Dice\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, but what makes this one better than <em>Let It Bleed<\/em> or other quintessential Stones platters?<\/p>\n<p>Anyways, Mick Jagger used to be romantically involved with Marianne Faithfull during the Sixties.\u00c2\u00a0 They were quite the item in Swinging London.\u00c2\u00a0 An appetite for drugs that would make Hunter Thompson jealous slowed down her career, but she did make a comeback.\u00c2\u00a0 Faithfull would later appear on <em>Night And Day II<\/em>, an album by Joe Jackson.\u00c2\u00a0 One of Jackson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s albums from the Eighties was <em>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s A Big World<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 It was an ambitious live concept album.\u00c2\u00a0 The only other live concept album I can think of is Jackson Browne\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Running On Empty<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Regardless, Jackson got it wrong.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s really a small world after all.<em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>* The funniest Al Gore moment that I can think of (outside of Lisa Simpson buying a copy of his book) took place during the 1992 Vice Presidential debate.\u00c2\u00a0 I was over at the Stagecoach Inn; a bachelor pad where the Wig\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s two brothers lived with some other guy.\u00c2\u00a0 My buddy Will showed up with a twelve-pack like he was Archie Bunker watching a football game. \u00c2\u00a0He was rooting for Dan Quayle to tear gore up.\u00c2\u00a0 Then Perot\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s candidate, James Stockdale, started into his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Who am I?\u00c2\u00a0 What am I doing here?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d routine.\u00c2\u00a0 Soon after that, Will\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s brother Phillionaire called up looking for Admiral Will Stockdale.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, that wasn&#8217;t really a Gore moment, but writing this reminded me of that incident and it is one of my favorite anecdotes.<\/p>\n<p><em> <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Jon Daly has been a SABR member since 2001.
