I was listening to the news in the radio and they told that a venezuelan player had hit one.”

As I explained her the difference between an outside the park homerun and an inside the park one, I started to look for the game in the net and found that the Arizona DiamondBacks had defeated the Atlanta Braves 2-1 with an inside the park homer hit by Gerardo Parra.

At that moment I looked in my mind files for others venezuelans who had hit that kind of connection in MLB but I only saw blank pages. Anyway I knew that some venezuelan had done it.

As I read that Parra’s home run was due in part to a collision between the outfielders Nate McLouth and Jason Heyward while running to catch the ball hit to the right center field, I recalled a game where Pokey Reese hit a home run outside and another inside the park playing for the Boston Red Sox. In the notes of that game the writers referred that Tony Armas had been the last player of the Red Sox who had accomplished that fact in a game played on September 24th, 1983.

McLouth layed on the grass while Heyward got up and chased the ball in the warning track to begin a relay that didn’t arrive on time. Mark Reynold ran on first base because he was hit by Peter Moylan (who relieved Kenshin Kawakami) and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Young. “When I arrived to second base, the third base coach shouted ‘Come on, come on’”, said Parra.

Armas hit the ball outside the Tiger Stadium against Dan Petry in the first frame to bat in Jim Rice and give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead before Detroit. In the eighth inning Armas hit another home run, this one inside the park against the same Petry to plate in Wade Boggs and set the score 5-0. In the bottom of the ninth inning the Tigers threatened but only could score 3 runs. John Tudor got the win and Bob Stanley the save.

Atlanta had scored a run in the top of the eighth inning on doubles by Heyward and Brian McCann before Aaron Heilman (W), who relieved Ian Kennedy.

Immediately it blinked in my mind a ball hit by Bobby Abreu on August 27th , 2000 to give the Philadelphia Phillies the win against the San Francisco Giants in Veteran’s Stadium.

Chad Qualls retired the ninth inning to get the save. Kennedy hurled the first seven innings scoreless for the DBacks.

The Giants scored first on Ramón Martínez double and Doug Martínez single against Bruce Chen. Abreu smacked a dinger against Mark Gardner in the sixth inning to tie the score. At the bottom of the tenth inning, Abreu hit a walkoff inside the park homer before the reliever Aaron Fultz to give Philadelphia and pitcher Chen the win 2-1. Ed Vosberg got the save.

At first I didn’t find any venezuelans who had hit homers inside the park in MLB. Now I had recalled two guys who had recorded dingers inside and outside the park in the same game. How many more Venezuelan players would have hit inside the park home runs in MLB?

Researching at the web page baseball-reference.com, I found that at least other nine Venezuelan had inside the park homers in MLB.
