Ducks Ponder Activating All-Star Closer Simas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both divisions have dandy races ahead for the final two weeks of the first half in the <strong>Atlantic League <\/strong>although they are pretty much two-team battles.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Long Island<\/strong> is a third team within striking distance, four games off the pace in the <strong>Liberty Division<\/strong>, but the <strong>Ducks <\/strong>have to be considered a long shot because they would have to climb over two teams and do it after the loss of two key pitchers.<\/p>\n<p>Four major series are worth pin-pointing between now and the mid-season <strong>All-Star Game<\/strong> the Ducks will host July 6, with two-time defending champion <strong>Somerset<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>involved in three of them.<\/p>\n<p>The head-to-head battles between top contenders start this very evening (Tuesday) when <strong>York<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>one-half game up on the <strong>Patriots<\/strong>, hosts their <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5846\" title=\"atlantic\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>Freedom Division <\/strong>opponents for three consecutive days.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Southern Maryland<\/strong>, with the same size of lead in the <strong>Liberty Division<\/strong>, will host second place <strong>Camden<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>July 1-4.\u00c2\u00a0 The other big series will find Somerset at Southern Maryland this weekend (June 25-27), and Somerset hosting Camden early next week (June 28-30).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">After Two Hurlers Leave, Bill Simas Is an Option<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Long Island<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>Manager <strong>Dave LaPoint <\/strong>tried to show his upbeat side when this reporter dropped in Saturday, but it was difficult since the Ducks, who had \u00c2\u00a0at least their share of injuries early in the year, had just learned they would have to make do without key starters <strong>Sidney Ponson <\/strong>and <strong>Joselo Diaz. <\/strong>Ponson (4-5, 5.64), a longtime major leaguer, told LaPoint \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the fun had gone out of it\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and he was heading home to <strong>Fort Lauderdale<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 Diaz, sporting a 1.79 earned run average and a 5-2 record while allowing only 36 hits in 55.1 innings, left to play in <strong>Mexico<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>Experienced pitchers are difficult to find this time of year, but the <strong>Ducks <\/strong>may have one solution in their organization.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Bill Simas <\/strong>was the <strong>Atlantic League\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>all-star closer last season before becoming Long Island\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fulltime pitching coach this summer.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s an option we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re thinking about,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d LaPoint admitted.\u00c2\u00a0 Those 27 saves and 5-4 record to go along with a 2.76 earned run average last season would tempt anyone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">This \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn That<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> Joe Holden\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>blurred vision from fouling a pitch off himself obviously came around faster than it appeared likely because <strong>Somerset<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>had the impressive outfielder hitting leadoff Sunday (2-for-4)\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 Longtime <strong>Atlantic Leaguer Pete Rose, Jr. <\/strong>has become the hitting coach for the <strong>Florence (KY) Freedom <\/strong>of the independent <strong>Frontier League.<\/strong> Rose played for <strong>Long Island, Bridgeport, Newark <\/strong>and <strong>York<\/strong><strong>, <\/strong>winding up at .278-3-33 in 63 games for the <strong>Revolution <\/strong>last season.<\/p>\n<p>(<em>These are excerpts from the <\/em><em>Atlantic League Notebook. <\/em>Subscriptions to the full <em>Notebook <\/em>are available via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wirzandassociates.com\/\">www.WirzandAssociates.com<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob Wirz also writes a weekly column, the <em>Independent Baseball Insider<\/em>, as well as a blog, www.IndyBaseballChatter.com.
