{"id":6476,"date":"2010-07-08T14:04:52","date_gmt":"2010-07-08T21:04:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=6476"},"modified":"2011-02-24T17:24:50","modified_gmt":"2011-02-25T00:24:50","slug":"just-how-good-is-chipper-jones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/08\/just-how-good-is-chipper-jones\/","title":{"rendered":"Just How Good is Chipper Jones?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Chipper Jones seems to be heading towards retirement at the end of the 2010 season, it would appear to be a good point at which to ask \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Just how good a career has he had?\u00c2\u00a0 After all, he has played seventeen seasons for the same team (the Atlanta Braves) and was an All-Star six times.\u00c2\u00a0 But did he really post Hall of Fame numbers during his career?<\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bill James\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Win Shares system is the most comprehensive tool available to understand <strong>how good a season<\/strong> a player had.\u00c2\u00a0 It includes offensive and defensive contributions and adjusts for all relevant factors.\u00c2\u00a0 The CAWS Career Gauge (Career Assessment\/Win Shares) uses win shares to measure <strong>how good a career<\/strong> a player had.\u00c2\u00a0 And a player has to have played at least ten seasons to be considered.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CAWS Gauge, as of the end of the 2009 season, only ninety-seven (97) position players (not pitchers) in the modern era have put together <strong>obvious HOF numbers<\/strong> during their playing careers (since 1920).\u00c2\u00a0 Only ten of these players have been third basemen.\u00c2\u00a0 Of theses ten, Chipper Jones is in 5<sup>th<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the ten third basemen who have put together obvious HOF numbers during their careers (since 1920).\u00c2\u00a0 The first number is career win shares, the second is core value (the win shares for the ten best seasons) and the third is the CAWS score.\u00c2\u00a0 Bold print indicates the player is in the Hall of Fame.\u00c2\u00a0 A CAWS score of 270 is needed to establish obvious HOF numbers for a third baseman.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\" bgcolor=\"#f7f7ef\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\" bgcolor=\"#f7f7ef\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
