{"id":7269,"date":"2010-08-08T07:19:17","date_gmt":"2010-08-08T14:19:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=7269"},"modified":"2010-08-08T07:19:17","modified_gmt":"2010-08-08T14:19:17","slug":"story-lines-terrific-for-first-no-hitter-in-6-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/08\/story-lines-terrific-for-first-no-hitter-in-6-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Story Lines Terrific for First No-Hitter in 6 Years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While major league baseball has been basking in perfect games and no-hitters this season, it had been nearly six years since the <strong>Atlantic League <\/strong>enjoyed such a feat before <strong>Southern Maryland\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Joe Newby <\/strong>and <strong>Jim Ed Warden <\/strong>combined to hold <strong>Newark <\/strong>hitless in a 3-1 victory at <strong>Bears &amp; Eagles Riverfront Stadium <\/strong>Wednesday night.\u00c2\u00a0 The story had a delicious number of sidebars, some of them courtesy of <em>Notebook<\/em> reader <strong>Danny Phillips.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5846\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>The first thing that jumps out is the two-person nature of the no-hitter, but Newby was making only his fifth start of the season and his fifth since 2005 when he was a 23-year-old in his second season in the lower levels of the <strong>Oakland Athletics <\/strong>farm system <strong>(Vancouver, BC, Northwest League).<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been past the seventh (inning) since college <strong>(Colorado State-Pueblo)<\/strong>,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Newby said, adding that he was \u00e2\u20ac\u0153gassed\u00e2\u20ac\u009d when he started the ninth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Butch Hobson <\/strong>allowed the right-hander every opportunity to finish, but three walks and a hit batsman gave the <strong>Bears <\/strong>a run, and no one had been retired.\u00c2\u00a0 Warden wiggled his way past two veterans of major league play, <strong>Daryle Ward <\/strong>and <strong>Carl Everett<\/strong>, then induced <strong>Isaiah Kaaihue <\/strong>to hit into a force at second for his league-leading 20<sup>th<\/sup> save.<\/p>\n<p>Everett provided one of the game\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ironies, as Danny Phillips reminded, because the 14-year major league vet had broken up the perfect game effort of the <strong>New York Yankees\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Mike Mussina <\/strong>with a pinch safety just out of the reach of <strong>Derek Jeter <\/strong>and <strong>Chuck Knoblauch <\/strong>with two out in the ninth at <strong>Boston\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Fenway Park <\/strong>September 2, 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Atlantic League\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>other no-hitters were complete-game efforts.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Rod Henderson <\/strong>of <strong>Long Island <\/strong>stopped <strong>Atlantic City <\/strong>3-0 May 25, 2001, and <strong>Newark\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Joe Gannon <\/strong>accomplished the feat 6-0 against <strong>Somerset <\/strong>August 17, 2004.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>* * * *WANT MORE INDEPENDENT BASEBALL COVERAGE?\u00c2\u00a0 Check out\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indybaseballchatter.com\/\">www.IndyBaseballChatter.com<\/a> * * * *<\/strong> <strong>\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">This \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcn That<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridgeport <\/strong>has won eight of nine to move within one game of <strong>Liberty <\/strong>leader <strong>Southern Maryland <\/strong>and strengthen its hold on the first postseason wild card\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<strong> Matt Watson (Lancaster) <\/strong>has been getting more playing time in the <strong>Oakland <\/strong>outfield, logging 15 at-bats in the last eight days with three hits and two RBI.\u00c2\u00a0 He is 5-for-27 overall in his 11 games in the majors this season\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6The Atlantic League proved very prominent in a <strong>Pacific Coast League <\/strong>contest earlier this week when <strong>Michael Ryan (Somerset) <\/strong>got <strong>Salt Lake City (Angels) <\/strong>off toward a 5-2 win over <strong>Portland (San Diego) <\/strong>with a three-run double in the first and recent signee <strong>Ryan Houston<\/strong>, also a <strong>Patriots <\/strong>grad, got the final out when he struck out <strong>Wily Mo Pena,<\/strong> who was with <strong>Bridgeport <\/strong>until last month.\u00c2\u00a0 Pena has not hurt his chances of getting called up to the parent <strong>Padres,<\/strong> however,<strong> <\/strong>by hitting .340 (16-for-47) and an on-base percentage of .407 in 14 games.\u00c2\u00a0 He had a five-hit (all singles), four-RBI game at <strong>Las Vegas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>(These are excerpts from the Atlantic League Notebook.\u00c2\u00a0 Subscriptions to the full Notebook are available via <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\"><em>www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/em><\/a><em> or <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wirzandassociates.com\/\"><em>www.WirzandAssociates.com<\/em><\/a><em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Bob Wirz also writes a weekly column, the Independent Baseball Insider, as well as a blog, www.IndyBaseballChatter.com.
