but a rookie in baseball even though this is his first season as general manager at <strong>Bridgeport<\/strong>, and even though he has eight previous championship rings it would have extra meaning if he could add one with the <strong>Bluefish.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153It (championship) would mean a lot\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, says Goughan, who is in an Independent league for the first time.\u00c2\u00a0 For one thing, it would deliver what Owner <strong>Frank Boulton <\/strong>asked of the longtime baseball executive.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When Frank hired me, he said he wanted to see a quality team on the field.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>General managers have lots of responsibilities with the primary one usually thought of as putting the organization in the black, which has been a problem in Bridgeport, one of only three franchises <strong>(Newark, Somerset)<\/strong> still active from the initial season in 1998.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 They are not always hands-on in daily player recruiting, though Goughan has been, working in tandem with Manager <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5846\" title=\"atlantic\" src=\"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/atlantic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"134\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a>Willie Upshaw <\/strong>in building the Bluefish into a second-half power that put together a marvelous August (25-6) to sweep into first place in the <strong>Liberty Division<\/strong> and virtually lock up a postseason berth for the first time since 2006 and only the second time in the last nine years.<\/p>\n<p>Goughan was a general manager for 25 years in Triple-A, 15 at <strong>Colorado  Springs<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>and 10 at <strong>Rochester<\/strong><strong>, NY<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>and he has overseen a number of other teams in dual-ownership situations.\u00c2\u00a0 Goughan earned his eight previous championship rings between 1984 and 2000.\u00c2\u00a0 He was assistant sports information director when <strong>Eastern Michigan<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>won the <strong>California Bowl <\/strong>in \u00e2\u20ac\u212287.\u00c2\u00a0 His seven baseball rings were with <strong>Little Falls, NY (New York-Penn League) <\/strong>in \u00e2\u20ac\u212284, Rochester in \u00e2\u20ac\u212288, <strong>Albuquerque<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>in \u00e2\u20ac\u212290, Colorado  Springs in \u00e2\u20ac\u212292 and \u00e2\u20ac\u212295 and as president and general manager of <strong>Idaho realize <strong>Frank Boulton <\/strong>sold a piece of the <strong>Long Island Ducks <\/strong>earlier this year to longtime friend <strong>Seth Waugh<\/strong>, who is CEO of <strong>Deutsche Bank Americas.<\/strong> Waugh\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s involvement is not a secret since he shows up in the Ducks\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 yearbook.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If there is more to this story it will have to be unearthed later.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sparky Gets to 902 Wins, Trailing Only One Other Manager<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Considerable attention was drawn earlier this week to <strong>Somerset<\/strong><strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>900<sup>th<\/sup> franchise victory, in part because <strong>Sparky Lyle <\/strong>has been at the helm for the entire time.\u00c2\u00a0 Perhaps more important is the fact the red-hot <strong>Patriots <\/strong>now have a four-game lead in the <strong>Freedom Division<\/strong>, the same margin they enjoy over <strong>Long Island <\/strong>should <strong>York <\/strong>rally in the last 17 days and require the wild card to come into play.<\/p>\n<p>Lyle has managed more victories with one team than anyone else in the 18 years since Independent baseball started, but he has one remaining hurdle.\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Doug Simunic<\/strong> of <strong>Fargo, ND <\/strong>in the <strong>Northern League <\/strong>has a 976-902 lead over Lyle in total wins although the former <strong>New York Yankees <\/strong>closer is
