{"id":7876,"date":"2010-09-07T12:34:04","date_gmt":"2010-09-07T19:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.seamheads.com\/?p=7876"},"modified":"2010-09-07T12:34:04","modified_gmt":"2010-09-07T19:34:04","slug":"just-how-good-is-jim-thome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seamheads.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/07\/just-how-good-is-jim-thome\/","title":{"rendered":"Just How Good is Jim Thome?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jim Thome recently passed Mark McGwire for the #9 spot on the all-time home run list with 584 round trippers.\u00c2\u00a0 So, an obvious question arises: Just how good is Jim Thome?\u00c2\u00a0 Or, better yet, does his career really reflect Hall of Fame numbers?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is Yes.\u00c2\u00a0 At the end of the 2009 season, <strong>Jim Thome had established HOF numbers<\/strong> according to the CAWS Career Gauge.\u00c2\u00a0 At that time, his numbers suggested that he had the #12 best career of any first baseman since 1920 (the modern era).<\/p>\n<p>Bill James\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Win Shares system is the most comprehensive tool available to understand <strong>how good a season<\/strong> a player had.\u00c2\u00a0 It includes offensive and defensive contributions and adjusts for all relevant factors.\u00c2\u00a0 The CAWS Career Gauge (Career Assessment\/Win Shares) uses win shares to measure <strong>how good a career<\/strong> a player has had.<\/p>\n<p>According to the CAWS Gauge, as of the end of the 2009 season, <strong>only ninety-seven (97) position players <\/strong>(not pitchers) in the modern era have put together <strong>obvious HOF numbers<\/strong> during their playing careers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jim Thome has the #65 best career numbers of any position player since 1920<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 That puts him just behind Hall of Famers Willie Stargell and Rod Carew and just ahead of\u00c2\u00a0 Lou Brock and Frankie Frisch.\u00c2\u00a0 Jim Thome has really had an outstanding career.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a list of the top twelve first base careers in terms of the numbers the player produced at the major league level.\u00c2\u00a0 The first number is career win shares, the second is core value (the win shares for the ten best seasons) and the third is the CAWS score [CAWS = CV + .25(CWS \u00e2\u20ac\u201c CV)].\u00c2\u00a0 Bold print indicates the player is in the Hall of Fame.\u00c2\u00a0 Of course, all of these players have Hall of Fame numbers.<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td align=\"center\" bgcolor=\"#f7f7ef\"><\/td>\n<td align=\"center\" bgcolor=\"#f7f7ef\"><span style=\"color: #000000;
