S\u00c3\u00b3lo tuve oportunidad de verlo jugar, por televisi\u00c3\u00b3n en el play off de la Liga Nacional y en la Serie Mundial de 1971. Una tarde de octubre de ese a\u00c3\u00b1o empezamos a jugar pelota de goma en la calle mientras el Pap\u00c3\u00a1 de uno de nuestros amigos ve\u00c3\u00ada el juego de San Francisco y Pittsburgh en el televisor. No hab\u00c3\u00adamos empezado a jugar cuando el se\u00c3\u00b1or empez\u00c3\u00b3 a celebrar un sencillo impulsor de dos carreras de Clemente en el juego que le dio el pase a la Serie Mundial a los Piratas. Luego vino aquel jonr\u00c3\u00b3n contra Jim Palmer en el tercer inning del sexto juego contra Baltimore. Aquel s\u00c3\u00a1bado est\u00c3\u00a1bamos en una casa de campo. Todos salimos corriendo del r\u00c3\u00ado cuando o\u00c3\u00admos a Delio Amado Le\u00c3\u00b3n narrar “Joooonr\u00c3\u00b3n de Roberto Clemente”.<\/p>\n
Estas escenas familiares regresaron a mi mente cuando me enter\u00c3\u00a9 que hab\u00c3\u00adan estrenado una pel\u00c3\u00adcula titulada “Chasing 3000” (Director: Gregory J. Lanesey. Guionistas: Bill Mikita, Chris D’Annunzio). El argumento est\u00c3\u00a1 basado en la afici\u00c3\u00b3n de 2 hermanos por el b\u00c3\u00a9isbol y Roberto Clemente. En la temporada de 1972 existe la posibilidad de que el pelotero bor\u00c3\u00adcua alcance los 3000 hits. Los hermanos Mickey y Roger deciden que van a estar en el juego donde Clemente batee ese hit, no importa donde ni cuando. La distrofia muscular de Roger lo convierte en alguien m\u00c3\u00a1s fuerte que Mickey cuando se trata de llegar a ese juego donde Clemente bateara el hit 3000.<\/p>\n
No he visto la pel\u00c3\u00adcula, sin embargo me parece un maravilloso homenaje desde la solidaridad intensa de los nexos familiares. A\u00c3\u00ban recuerdo los sucesos del terremoto de Managua a finales de 1972 y la determinaci\u00c3\u00b3n de Clemente de llevar auxilio a quienes pasaban momentos dif\u00c3\u00adciles. Tambi\u00c3\u00a9n recuerdo la noticia de su muerte y la leyenda de todos sus logros como beisbolista y como gran ser humano. Espero tener oportunidad de ver esa pel\u00c3\u00adcula.<\/p>\n
English Translation <\/strong><\/p>\n I only had the chance of seeing him play on TV, during the National League play off and the World Series of 1971. On an October afternoon of that year we started to play ball on the street while the father of one of my friends saw the game between San Francisco and Pittsburgh. We haven`t started playing when the guy started to celebrate a two-run RBI single of Clemente. Pittsburgh won that game and went to the World Series. Then it came that home run against Jim Palmer in the third inning of the sixth game versus Baltimore. That Saturday we were in the countryside. Everybody came out from the river when we heard Delio Amado Le\u00c3\u00b3n narrating: “It’s a hooooome run by Clemente”.<\/p>\n Those family scenes came back to my mind when I knew about a new film titled “Chasing 3000” (Director: Gregory J. Lanesey. Writers: Bill Mikita, Chris D’Annunzio). The plot is about the story of two brothers who follow baseball and Roberto Clemente. In the 1972 season there is a real possibility for Clemente of arriving to the 3000 hits. Mickey and Roger decide that they’re going to be there when Clemente get that hit. No matter when or where. Roger’s muscular dystrophy makes him sombody stronger than his healthy brother when the point is to get to that game where Clemente will hit the hit 3000.<\/p>\n I still haven`t seen the film. But it seems to me a marvelous tribute from the intense solidarity of the family ties. I still remember the earthquake of Managua at the end of 1972 and Clemente’s determination of bringing help to those who were having very difficult times.. I also remember the news on his death and the legend of all his achievements as a ballplayer and as a great human being.
