League Meeting Could Hold Key for Many Indy Teams"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 While some stories had pointed to a decision in the middle of this week on the fate of the dozen or so teams without more than a four-team league in which to operate next season and the <strong>Golden League <\/strong>had projected an announcement for today (Thursday), I cannot help but believe Monday\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <strong>Frontier League <\/strong>ownership meeting outside of <strong>Chicago (Orland Park)<\/strong> may hold much of the key.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 That conclusion comes about since the four remaining <strong>Northern League <\/strong>teams have applied to the Frontier to join the 12-team Midwestern circuit and one of them, <strong>Joliet, IL,<\/strong> seems totally determined that is the league where it wants the <strong>JackHammers <\/strong>to land.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>The Herald News <\/em>is reporting a group of investors, including current minority stockholder <strong>Alan Oremus<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>has reached a tentative agreement to buy the cash-strapped Joliet team.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all still very positive,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d City Manager <strong>Thomas Thanas <\/strong>told the newspaper.\u00c2\u00a0 Thanas and Councilman <strong>Thomas Giarrante<\/strong>, who bluntly told <em>The Herald News<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153we want to be in the Frontier League\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, plan to be on site to lobby for admission to the 18-year-old league.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Joliet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s destination could hold at least part of the key to the widely-rumored plan for the Northern League teams plus the remains of the Golden and United Leagues to form what is being called the <strong>North American League<\/strong>.\u00c2\u00a0 If formed, the NAL could have a dozen or more teams in three divisions with most of the games in the division with the best geographic fit for each team and some inter-divisional play.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 If Joliet leaves, only three teams\u00e2\u20ac\u201dat most\u00e2\u20ac\u201dremain for one division.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Both <strong>Northern League <\/strong>Commissioner <strong>Clark Griffith <\/strong>and <strong>Schaumburg, IL <\/strong>Owner <strong>Rich Ehrenreich <\/strong>have told media in Illinois the three leagues will play each other although other possible stumbling blocks, which likely are at least delaying the finalization of an agreement, include the fact Schaumburg has debts and is up for sale and Golden League stalwart <strong>Chico, CA <\/strong>has been facing obstacles to continuing to play at <strong>Nettleton Stadium.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>Additional cities most prominently mentioned for the North American circuit include United League holdovers <strong>Edinburg, Harlingen <\/strong>and <strong>San Angelo <\/strong>in <strong>Texas<\/strong>, <strong>Alberta <\/strong>province teams in <strong>Edmonton <\/strong>and <strong>Calgary<\/strong> plus <strong>Maui, HA <\/strong>from the \u00e2\u20ac\u212210 Golden League and <strong>Rockford, IL <\/strong>and <strong>Zion, IL <\/strong>from the Northern League.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Atlantic League Could Get Second Long Island Team<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 While we have nothing new to report on the <strong>Atlantic League\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <\/strong>desire to have a four-team division in the southwest a year from now because of the new stadium planned for <strong>Sugar Land, TX<\/strong>, it appears the league is closer to adding a second franchise on heavily populated <strong>Long Island.\u00c2\u00a0 <\/strong>It already has the highly popular <strong>Long Island Ducks, <\/strong>who annually sell out and lead Independent Baseball in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 <strong>Nassau County<\/strong> hopes to break ground no later than 2012 for a ballpark, with Long Island\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s leading newspaper, <em>Newsday<\/em>, reporting stadium funding would be guaranteed by the county and payments would be made by a team.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atlanticleaguebaseball.com\/\">www.AtlanticLeagueBaseball.com<\/a> ADDED TO <a COVERAGE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">* * * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Six Indy Players With 2010 Major League Time Now Out<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The minor league free agency toll, which always numbers in the hundreds in the fall, has hit no less than six former Independent players who logged some major league time this season.\u00c2\u00a0 The most surprising might be that of outfielder <strong>Matt Watson<\/strong>, who went all the way from <strong>Lancaster, PA (Atlantic League) <\/strong>this season to the <strong>American League\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Oakland Athletics <\/strong>before an appendectomy sidelined him.\u00c2\u00a0 Oakland also dropped pitcher <strong>Edwar Ramirez<\/strong>, who had rebounded from twice being released by the <strong>Los Angeles Angels <\/strong>to pitch for the <strong>New York Yankees <\/strong>as well as the A\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s.\u00c2\u00a0 He had made his way to the majors by way of <strong>Pensacola, FL <\/strong>(now in the <strong>American Association<\/strong>) and <strong>Edinburg, TX <\/strong>(a current <strong>United League <\/strong>member).\u00c2\u00a0 The change-up artist posted a 7-2 record with two saves in 103 major league games.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Lefty <strong>Raul Valdes (New Jersey <\/strong>and <strong>Nashua, NH, Can-Am League)<\/strong> was dropped by the <strong>New York Mets, Pittsburgh <\/strong>axed RHP <strong>Chris Jakubauskas (Lincoln, NE, American Association; Florence, KY and Ohio Valley, Frontier League; Orange County, Golden League), <\/strong>the <strong>Chicago White Sox <\/strong>released LHP <strong>Randy Williams <\/strong>(Edinburg), and OF <strong>Cory Aldridge (Newark, NJ, <\/strong>Atlantic League) chose free agency from the Angels.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Others with recent major league time on release lists include first baseman <strong>Wily Mo Pena (Bridgeport, CT, <\/strong>Atlantic) and pitcher <strong>Greg Burke (Atlantic City, NJ,<\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0 Atlantic) by <strong>San Diego <\/strong>and hurlers <strong>Josh Kinney (River City, <\/strong>Frontier League)<strong> <\/strong>by <strong>St. Louis, <\/strong>\u00c2\u00a0<strong>Mark Prior <\/strong>(Orange County) by <strong>Texas, Scott Patterson (Gateway, <\/strong>Frontier, and Lancaster) by <strong>Seattle <\/strong>and <strong>R. J.
