This site uses 3 differente Metrics, which are used to gauge a player’s productivitiy. No ONE statistic is perfect, nor can it quantify all aspects of the game. These statistics should be used as a starting point in evaluating a player.
First, choose a Metric in the top right hand corner of the page
Your choices are:
- Wins Above Replacement (WAR)
- Win Shares (WS)
- Win Shares Above Bench (WSAB)
As you navigate the site, your Metric of choice will be remembered
There are a number of different sections in the site, which are customizable to your liking. The site includes every single player/manager who has ever played or managed in Major League Baseball (from 1871).
Some of the many things that you can find at The Basball Gauge are:

Also included are Components Above Replacement. All stats are park adjusted, while Pitching statistics are defense independant. These stats are compared to the league, so they are normalized when comparing different eras and run environments. This eliminates the need for minimum Plate Appearance or Innings Pitched qualifications
A good example of how these statistics work is the 1980 American League Batting title. George Brett hit .390 and won the title by 38 points over Cecil Cooper. But Brett only accumulated 449 At Bats while Cooper had 622. Because of this, Cooper ends up with 66.5 Hits Above Replacement to Brett’s 63.9
- Batting
- Hits Above Replacemeent ie (1941 American League)
- Homeruns Above Replacemeent ie (All-Time Career Leaderboard)
- Stolen Bases per Attempt Above Replacement ie (Single Season Leaders in Live Ball Era)
- Pitching
- Strikeouts Above Replacemeent ie (Single Season Leaders in Modern Era)
- Shutouts Above Replacemeent ie (Cumulative leaders since 2000)
- Strikeouts per Walk Above Replacement ie (2009 Leaders)
Finally, there are Adjusted Win-Loss Records. Pitcher’s Win-Loss records are influenced by factors in which the pitcher is not in control, ie Run Support, Fielding, and Bullpens. Adjusted Win-Loss Records estimate a pitcher’s record given that they have league average run support, fielders, and bullpen.
- Adjusted Wins ie (All-Time Leaders in Modern Era)
The plan is to continually add features to the site and make any necessary improvements. The next feature to be added to the site…. Graphs.
