Adrenalina, agallas y corazón (Andrenaline, Guts and Heart)
El primero de la serie divisional de la Liga Americana de 2008, entre los Angelinos y los Medias Rojas fue un juego de dientes apretados que pareció inclinarse hacia el lado de Anaheim cuando se fueron adelante 1-0 aprovechando un error del campocorto Jed Lowrie ante rodado de Vladimir Guerrero. La mirada vidriosa de Lowrie se estrelló contra la malla de su guante cuando Torii Hunter dejó caer una línea a la izquierda para traer la carrera de Garret Anderson.
La forma como lanzaba John Lackey, con un control y una intensidad a todo tren hacía temer por una derrota dolorosa para Jon Lester cuya presencia en el montículo traía imágenes de Denny McLain, Bob Gibson, Gaylord Perry, Luis Tiant, Jim Hunter, etc en aquella temporada de 1968.
Cada lanzamiento de Lester paralizaba los bates de Anaheim y hundía la mirada de Lowrie en la arcilla del infield. La mirada de Lester traspasaba las amenazas de los contrarios y los gritos de los fanáticos. Un vapor de pólvora ebullía en su cara cada vez que hacia el wind up. Lowrie sacó su clase y coraje para tomar dos roletazos en el cuarto inning y una línea en el quinto, sin embargo un rictus amargo apretaba sus mandíbulas. Con cada out que sacaba Lester, la mirada de Mike Scioscia se estremecía en el dugout.
Pero el dominio de Lackey se mantenía inning a inning. Lowrie terminó de reivindicarse al anotar la tercera carrera de Boston en el noveno, amparado en sencillo de Ellsbury a la derecha. Luego robaría segunda y anotaría con sencillo de David Ortiz al centro.
Quizás dejamos de ver un blanqueo de Lester, pero tan emocionante como eso fue ver a los Medias Rojas mantenerse en el juego, pasar adelante y tener la defensa para resistir el acecho de los Angelinos. La serie apenas comienza, parece que veremos béisbol intenso.
English Translation
The first game of the 2008 ALDS between the Red Sox and the Angels was a very tight one that seemed to go the Anaheim way when they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third frame. Jed Lowrie couldn`t handle a Vladimir Guerrero’s grounder and Garret Anderson was safe at second base. Lowrie’s liquid glance clashed against his glove when Torii Hunter dropped a line drive to left field to bat in Anderson’s run.
The way John Lakey was pitching, with great command and a sharp intensity, could mean a painful loss for Jon Lester whose presence on the mound brought images of Denny McLain, Bob Gibson, Gaylord Perry, Luis Tiant, Jim Hunter, etc in that 1968 season.
Each Lester’s delivery freezed the bats of Anaheim and pushed Lowrie’s glance inside the clay of the infield. The glance of Lester trespassed the rivals’ threats and the shouts of the fans. A gun powder’s vapor boiled in his face each time he made the wind up. Lowrie showed his class and courage to take two grounders in the fourth frame and a line drive in the fifth, but a bitter flavor grabbed his jaws. Each out Lester got, Mike Scioscia stumbled his eyes against de dugout’s steps.
But Lackey kept getting zeros inning by inning. In the sixth frame Kevin Youkilis walked. Jason Bay smacked a dinger into the bleachers of leftfield to put the Red Sox to win 2-1 and show that if Manny Ramirez has carried the Dodgers on his shoulders, Bay is a better all around player. At this moment the shadow on Lowrie’s glance disappeared.
Justin Masterson relieved in the eighth. Mark Teixeira hit a fly to shallow centerfield that Jacoby Ellsbury took against the grass after running from the outfield. Vladimir Guerrero singled to left. When Torii Hunter singled to shallow rightfield. Everything looked great for the Angels. Guerrero touched second base and continued to third but Youkilis took the ball and threw Guerrero out on third base. Guerrero remained the rest of the game regretting in the dugout.
Lowrie completed his resurgence when he scored Boston’s third run in the ninth inning after Ellsbury`s single to rightfield. Ellsbury stole second and scored on David Ortiz single to center.
Maybe we couldn`t see a shutout by Lester. But as exciting as that was to watch the Red Sox keep competing, to come from behind and have the defense to resist the Angels threats. The Series is just beginning. It seems that we’ll see very good baseball.
