Resting Peacefully in the Shadows of Cooperstown
July 6, 2009 by Mike Lynch · 4 Comments
I just received word that my good friend and fellow Seamhead, Gene Carney, passed away in his sleep yesterday while vacationing in Alaska. Words cannot express the sorrow I feel. Gene began posting his “Notes From the Shadows of Cooperstown” here at Seamheads.com in March 2008 and we’d developed a friendship that was steeped in respect and admiration.
We exchanged ideas, discussed the Black Sox scandal, shared information, clarified things we’d written, talked about the future, and shared a good laugh or two. I never had the pleasure of meeting Gene in person and hoped to see him at a future SABR convention so I could shake his hand.
I hope wherever he is now, he has a season ticket, cold beer, warm hot dogs, and it never rains. And if there really is a God, the Pirates will always win.
Rest peacefully, my friend.

Wow, very sad news. His “Notes From The Shadows of Cooperstown” was a must read for me.
He will be missed.
One of the first columns I started reading when I joined Seamheads was Gene’s series on the Chicago History Museum.
My deepest condolences to everyone for this painful loss…AYT
Gene’s passing is a huge lost for SABR and baseball research in general. I was looking forward to seeing him at the Cooperstown SABR chapter meeting after the Hall of Fame inductions. Last year I chatted with him about Seamheads and had him sign a copy of his book for me. So sad and too soon!!
