Lincecum versus Halladay

Siempre he preferido los duelos de pitcheo como el tipo de juego que disfruto más en el béisbol. “The Freak” contra “Doc” pareciera ser el clásico enfrentamiento de dos lanzadores con grandes temporadas que se van a enfrascar en una disputa de bateadores dominados que pudiera extenderse más allá del sexto episodio con la pizarra colmada de arepas.

En algún momento de la temporada de 1969 fui a la librería de Cumanacoa con mi hermano Felipe y me quedé estático ante la portada de la revista “Sport Gráfico”. “Tom el terrífico”. Un pitcher con tres pelotas en la mano sonreía mientras descansaba en el clubhouse. Antes del primer juego de la Serie Mundial ante los Orioles de Baltimore había una gran expectativa porque Tom Seaver enfrentaría a Miguel Cuellar ambos ganadores del premio Cy Young en sus respectivas ligas. Cuellar venció a Seaver 4-1 para hacer sonreir a los expertos que predijeron la victoria de los oropéndolas en la Serie. Felipe me dijo que Baltimore le iba a pasar por encima a los Mets. Estuve tentado a responderle sólo me salió un asomo de sonrisa que se escondió tras mis pensamientos de que Seaver tendría otra oportunidad y de que esos Mets eran de cuidado por lo que habían hecho en la temporada para desbancar a los Cachorros de Chicago del primer lugar de la División Este de la Liga Nacional.

Las cualidades de Lincecum y Halladay dan para esperar una batalla de estrategias de pitcheos inesperados que hagan quebrar las vértebras de cada bateador. Lincecum variando su velocidad mediante su mecánica de pitcheo. Halladay escondiendo la pelota a punta de rectas de dos y cuatro costuras, del cambio de velocidad, de la curva y de la recta cortada. Todos elementos de una tabla periódica de pitcheo de alta factura.

El quinto juego de la Serie Mundial de 1957 encontró a Whitey Ford quién venía de ganar el primer juego 3-1 ante Warren Spahn y los Bravos de Milwaukee, y a Lew Burdette quién había derrotado a Bobby Shantz y los Yanquis 4-2 en el segundo.  El tipo de enfrentamiento que hace sospechar gran tensión y mucho sudor por el dominio que podrían ejecutar los lanzadores. Burdette con el excepcional control que tenía en sus lanzamientos. Ford por su extraordinaria capacidad de mantenerse calmado en situaciones difíciles, sólo Eddie Matthews, Henry Aaron y Joe Adcock pudieron ligarle sencillos corridos en el sexto inning para marcarle la carrera que le dio el triunfo a los Bravos.

Halladay participó en 33 juegos en la temporada regular de 2010, los inició todos, completó 9, ejecutó 4 blanqueos, 21 victorias, 10 reveses, 2.44 de efectividad, 250.2 innings, 30 boletos, 219 ponches, 1.041 de WHIP (boletos + hits por episodio), 24 jonrones.

Lincecum 33 juegos, 33 inicios, completó 1, 1 blanqueo,  16 victorias, 10 reveses, 3.43 de efectividad, 212.1 innings, 76 boletos, 231 ponches, 1.272 de WHIP, 18 jonrones.

En parte tuve que reconocer los argumentos de Felipe. Baltimore también tenía un gran pitcheo además de la excepcional defensiva y el respetable bateo que presentaba. En el segundo juego de la Serie de Campeonato de la Liga Americana, Dave McNally se batió a capa y espada ante Dave Boswell de los Mellizos de Minnesota el domingo 05 de octubre de 1969 en Memorial Stadium. La pizarra se mantuvo inmaculada por 10 episodios, sólo en el undécimo capítulo marcaron los Orioles mediante sencillo de Curt Motton que remolcó a Boog Powell. Es de imaginar la desesperación de Boswell en el dugout porque lo relevaron con Ron Perranowski y el primer bateador le bateó el imparable ganador. McNally sólo permitió 3 imparables, uno de César Tovar, otro de Tony Oliva y otro de George Mitterwald.

Otro juego de grandes expectativas fue el primero de la Serie Mundial de 1968. Denny McLain (46 juegos, 41 inicios, 28 completos, 6 blanqueos, 31 victorias, 6 derrotas, 1.96 de efectividad, 336 innings, 63 boletos, 280 ponches, 31 jonrones) versus Bob Gibson (34 juegos, 34 inicios, 28 completos, 13 blanqueos, 22 ganados, 9 perdidos, 1.12 de efectividad, 304.2 innings, 62 boletos, 268 ponches, 11 jonrones). Los Cardenales de San Luis le marcaron 3 carreras a McLain en el cuarto inning y Gibson maniató a los Tigres de Detroit, solo pemitió 5 imparables y ponchó a 17 en 9 episodios, rumbo a una victoria 4-0.

En el segundo juego de la Serie Mundial de 1969 Jerry Koosman se fajó con McNally y llevó a los milagrosos Mets a una victoria 2-1 que me hizo decirle a Felipe: “Y ahora que me dices de lo que le van a hacer los Orioles a los Mets?”

¿Qué veremos este sábado 16 de octubre? ¿Un juego que se enfría alrededor del cuarto inning como el de Seaver ante Cuellar o el de McLain ante Gibson? ¿Uno más cerrado como el de Koosman y McNally o el de Burdette y Ford?  ¿O un forcejeo sin aliento como el de Boswell y McNally?  Lincecum y Halladay cuentan con los elementos para enfrascarse en un juego cerrado, quizás no a través de todo el juego porque el mismo ha cambiado en la forma como se manejan los lanzadores, pero sí para traspasar los bates contrarios mientras el juego llega a su máxima intensidad.

I’ve always chosen the pitching duels as the kind of game I enjoy the most. “The Freak” versus “Doc” seems to be the classical match between two pitchers with great seasons who are going to get into a battle of dominated batters that could extend beyond the sixth frame with the scoreboard painted in white.

In some moment of the 1969 season I arrived to the bookstore of Cumanacoa, Sucre, Venezuela with my brother Felipe and  remained ecstatic while reading the Sport Gráfico” magazine. “Tom the terrific”. It said. A pitcher with three baseballs in his right hand smiled while resting in the club house. Before the first game of the 1969 World Series there was a great expectation because Tom Seaver would face Mike Cuellar both later won the Cy Young award in their respective leagues that year. Cuellar defeated Seaver 4-1 to make smile the game’s experts who predicted the victory of the Orioles in the Classic of October. Felipe told me Baltimore was going to defeat easily the Mets. I almost replied him but only showed a little smile shadowed by my thoughts on Seaver’s second chance and on that you had to be careful with those Mets because of the way they beat the Chicago Cubs in the National League East Division.

Lincecum and Halladay have a lot of qualities that could lead to a battle of unexpected deliveries capable of breaking the abilities of each batter. Lincecum by shifting his speed through his mechanics. Halladay by hiding the baseball with his two and four seams fastballs, his cutter, his curve and his change. All of them are elements in a Periodic Table of great pitching.

The fifth game of he 1957 World Series found Whitey Ford, who had defeated Warren Spahn and the Milwaukee Braves 3-1 in the first game. And Lew Burdette who had defeated Bobby Shantz and the Yankees 4-2 in the second game. The kind of game that brings a lot of tension and a lot of sweat in the skin, because of the quality of the two hurlers. Burdette with the great control he had in his deliveries. Ford with his extraordinary ability to remain calm in the most difficult situations. Only Eddie Matthews, Henry Aaron and Joe Adcock could hit him consecutive singles in he sixth inning to score the run that gave the win to the Braves.

Halladay played in 33 games during the 2010 season, all of them starts, 9 complete games, 4 shutouts, 21 wins, 10 losses, 2.44 ERA, 250.2 innings, 30 walks, 219 struckouts, 1.041 WHIP, 24 home runs.

I had to admit, partially, Felipe’s reasoning. Baltimore also had a great pitching staff, besides a great defense and a respectable line up. In the second game of the  American League Championship Series, Dave McNally and Dave Boswell of the Minnesota Twins had a tremendous pitching duel on October 5^th, 1969 at Memorial Stadium. The scoreboard remained white for ten innings. Only in the eleventh inning the Orioles could score through Curt Motton’s single to plate in Boog Powell. It should have been despairing for Boswell to be relieved for Ron Perranowski just to watch from the dugout how Motton batted him the winning single. McNally only allowed 3 hits, one of Cesar Tovar, another of Tony Oliva and the other of George Mitterwald.

Another game of great expectations was the first one of the 1968 World Series. Denny McLain (46 games, 41 starts, 28 complete games, 6 shutouts, 31 wins, 6 losses, 1.96 ERA, 336 innings, 63 walks, 280 struckouts, 31 home runs) versus Bob Gibson (34 games, 34 starts, 28 complete games, 13 shutouts, 22 wins, 9 lossess, 1.12 ERA, 304.2 innings, 62 walks, 268 struckouts, 11 home runs). The St. Louis Cardinals scored 3 runs against McLain in the fourth inning and Gibson silenced the Detroit Tigers. He only allowed 5 hits and struckout 17 in 9 innings. The Cards won 4-0.

In the second game of the 1969 World Series Jerry Koosman hustled with McNally and gave the Miracle Mets a 2-1 victory. I told Felipe. “And now what do you say the Orioles are going to do with the Mets?”

¿What we’ll see this Saturday, October, 16^th 2010? ¿A game frozen around the fourth inning like that one of Seaver versus Cuellar or McLain vs Gibson?  ¿A tighter one like those of Koosman and McNally or Burdette and Ford? “Or a breathless battle like that one of Boswell and McNally? Lincencum and Halladay have the resources to get involved in a tight game, maybe not until the end of the game because the game have changed in the way the pitchers are handled, but to burn the rival bats to the point of getting the game to its maximum intensity.
