The Great MLB2K11 Giveaway

April 19, 2011 by · 15 Comments

Roy HalladayI was given a copy of MLB2K11 (Xbox 360) to use as a prize for our readers and podcast listeners and I’ve decided that rather than hold a blind drawing in which I reach into a hat and pull out a name I’m going to make you work for it. If you’re not familiar with Paul “Sully” Sullivan and his fantastic video shorts, check out the video below. Not only is it humorous and well done, but it fits our contest perfectly.

In the video below, Sully laments the “horrible handles” given to today’s ballplayers and I couldn’t agree with him more. Today’s sobriquets STINK with a capital STINK. Gone are the days when ballplayers had nicknames like “The Apollo of the Box” (Tony Mullane), “Death to Flying Things” (Bob Ferguson) and “The Duke of Tralee” (Roger Bresnahan). Instead, as Sully mentions below, we have “A-Rod,” “I-Rod” and “J-Roll.” Not the least bit clever and boring as hell, if you ask me.

So here’s the deal: whomever comes up with the best nickname for an active major league player gets the game. The runner-up will receive a copy of The SABR Baseball List & Record Book.

I want the nickname to be creative, clever, colorful and say something about the player. And it doesn’t matter if he already has a nickname; if you can come up with something better, by all means submit it. You can submit as many nicknames as you want for as many players as you want. The contest will run from April 19 to May 20 and the winners will be announced on Memorial Day (May 30).

Please help us put a stop to these terrible nicknames and you’ll be handsomely rewarded!

Send your submissions to mike.lynch@seamheads.com.

Special thanks to Clint Kaminska of KD&E, 2K Sports and Sully Baseball.

I was calling Justin Duchscherer ‘The Duke of Twirl’ or ‘The Duke of Hurl’ before anyone else, but those nicknames seem to be have been widely adopted now.

I guess I’ll go with Peanut Butter Blanton, because to me, Joe has always looked like an Elvis fan who ate a few too many of the King’s beloved Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches. (A’s fans generally called him Cupcakes, which I also like, but it’s not mine.)

  2. Mike Lynch says:

Great stuff, John. I love “The Duke of Twirl” and “Peanut Butter” Blanton is also a fantastic entry. Thanks!

  3. Jay Swartout says:

Hey Mike what about Alex “the Roid” Rodriguez

  4. Every one of my fellow Diamondbacks fans calls our infielder Ryan Roberts “RyRo”, but I call him The Fireman because since Spring Training this year, he’s been on fire and has carried his great hitting and batting average (not to mention his awesome defense) well into this season…so yes, The Fireman=RYAN ROBERTS :)

  5. bp says:

    Justified = Justin Morneau
    Nard Dogg = Denard Span
    Cuddy Bear = Michael Cuddyer

  6. Chris Day says:

Jacoby Ellsbury Dough Boy–Because of the name similarity and because he’s soft, fluffy, and flaky, just like the biscuits.

    Love Justified!

  8. Matt Defalco says:

I call Jose Bautista “The Bomber.” It works perfectly with his name Jose “The Bomber” Bautista, or Jose The Bomber. It also perfectly describes his style of play: launching bombs.

  9. Larry says:

When referring to him online, I spell Mark Reynolds’ name with a ton of uppercase K’s at the end. MarkKKKKKKKKKKKKK Reynolds

  10. Jeff Jorve says:

Since picking him up for my fantasy team last year, I have called Jose Bautista “Baumbs”, or alternatively “Baumbs Away”, and have sent the members of my league a “Baumbs Away!” text message every time he has gone yard since.

  11. Bryz says:

    Boof Bonser = The Boofalo

Due to his heavy physique and his legally changed first name, mixing “Boof” with “buffalo” was a no-brainer for me.

  12. Thomas says:

This is totally unoriginal. I’m ripping it off NotGraphs, but “Hepatitis K” for Daniel Bard had me in stitches.

  13. Shane says:

    Felix Hernandez = F Her

  14. Mike says:

    Logan Morrison = Wolverine Jim
